We celebrate the 10th anniversary of Northern Chords, 2009 – 2019, with special Gala Concert at this beautiful Fenham church. The first half of the programme is a tightly kept secret, but will involve special performances from almost all of this year’s international performers. There will be an anniversary party after the concert where you will have a chance to meet the musicians too!

Every year both alumni and current award winners join us for a series of intimate recitals at our home, the 1901 Arts Club.  Tickets include a pre-concert drink, the recital, and an opportunity to join and meet the musicians in the bar after the performance. 

'1901 Arts Club has cornered this corner of London, the balance so right, you can’t afford not to check it out. The Hattori tickets at £15 are worth every penny with or without the complimentary drink Guests unlike me who did not have to ‘rush’ also enjoyed
post-concert refreshments. No better start to anyone’s weekend.'

Instrumenten gaan van bespeler naar bespeler en de redenen daarvoor kunnen heel verschillend zijn. Bij het NMF zien we dit veelvuldig: een viool wordt teruggebracht, de liefde voor een cello is over, een musicus is uit z'n instrument gegroeid. De volgende bespelers van deze instrumenten staan gelukkig vaak alweer klaar. Tijdens een nieuwe reeks Huisconcerten ten kantore van het NMF, laten we graag enkele van deze verhalen aan u horen.

Elgar: Piano Quintet in A minor, op.84

Introduction by Diana McVeagh; performance by Guildhall students.

A day spent exploring Elgar’s chamber music, organised by the Guildhall School and the London Branch of the Elgar Society.

Elgar composed his three major chamber works at Brinkwells, his Sussex cottage, during 1918-1919.

Speakers, including Diana McVeagh and Philip Lancaster, will discuss the context and background to these works. Music will be performed by Guildhall musicians, finishing with a performance of the piano quintet.

Acclaimed for their “gusto, comradeship and sharp attack” (The Times) and “blazing and unusually forthright performance” (The Telegraph) the Barbican quartet is made up of four musicians who currently study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Their programme of Mozart, Debussy and Brahms brings together some of the finest of all string quartet writing.

Amarins Wierdsma and Edward Liddall are both distinguished graduates of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. They were 2017 YCAT finalists at the Wigmore Hall, playing the same Beethoven and Debussy pieces which they will be performing for our Society which had so enraptured the London audience.

Amarins is both a soloist and also first violinist of the London-based Barbican String Quartet. Performing with some well-known European Orchestras, she includes in her repertoire some of the most demanding concertos such as those by Bruch, Bach, Brahms, Vivaldi, Mendelssohn and Sibelius.

Edward studied at the Royal College of Music and Kings College Cambridge. He is now pursuing a dual career as soloist and accompanist, and has also given a highly acclaimed performance of the Schumann piano concerto.

Their London engagements have included recitals at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Wigmore Hall and the Barbican.

Sinfonia Cymru

Sinfonia Cymru presents a lively programme of music by Mozart, Bartok and leading Welsh composer Huw Watkins. This concert features Mozart’s intense and passionate Symphony No. 40 in G minor, and Three Welsh Songs, Watkins’ work inspired by Welsh folk music. The orchestra will be reunited with the masterful and ebullient Guest Conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy, and outstanding soloists Benjamin Baker and Timothy Ridout.

Join us at the annual RPS Young Musicians Recital on Wednesday 24 January 2018 in Marylebone, London.

For this evening of live music from our current RPS Young Musicians we return to the beautiful home of Bob and Elisabeth Boas for a second year. Performing in this intimate venue will be current RPS Emily Anderson Prize winner, Dutch-American violinist Amarins Wierdsma, along with the Pelléas Ensemble; a flute, viola and harp trio, formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, who were the inaugural winners of the RPS Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award in 2017.

The programme will feature an on-stage conversation with the musicians who will also be joined by some of our prize-winning composers, to talk about their work and the challenges they face as emerging artists. 

The evening ticket includes a recital, supper and wine as well as a chance to meet the musicians and find out about the challenges they face as they enter the music profession. All profits will go towards our Young Musicians Programme.
